Plantar Fasciitis

Here’s what’s going on:

Anatomy

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue running along the bottom of your foot, from your heel bone (calcaneus) to your toes. Its job is to support your arch and help with shock absorption when you walk or run.

The problem

With plantar fasciitis, tiny micro-tears or degeneration develop in the plantar fascia, usually near where it attaches to the heel. This causes inflammation and pain, especially after periods of rest.

Common causes/ risk factors

  • Overuse (running, long periods on hard surfaces)
  • Poor footwear (unsupportive shoes, worn-out soles)
  • Flat feet or very high arches
  • Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon
  • Weight gain or obesity

Typical Symptoms

  • Sharp or stabbing heel pain with the first steps in the morning
  • Pain after sitting for a while, then standing
  • Pain that eases with activity but returns after prolonged standing or walking
  • Tenderness along the bottom of the heel

Muscle Geek Treatment

Assessment First

Before firing up the devices, I’d confirm:

  • Pain localized to medial calcaneal tubercle and/or along the plantar fascia
  • Symptoms match the “first step in the morning” pattern
  • Check/Correct  muscle imbalances via MAT Techniques
  • Check for contributing factors:
  • Calf/Achilles tightness
  • Weak intrinsic foot muscles
  • Gait mechanics (over pronation, forefoot strike)
  • Footwear history

Class 4 Laser Therapy

GOAL: Reduce inflammation, speed healing, improve local circulation.

  • Target areas:
    1. Primary: Medial calcaneal tubercle (origin of plantar fascia)
    2. Secondary: Along the plantar fascia toward the midfoot
    3. Contributing muscle groups: Distal Achilles insertion, gastrocnemius-soleus junction

Treatment Plan:2–3× per week initially, taper as symptoms improve

PiezoWave Shockwave

GOAL: Break up adhesions, stimulate neovascularization, reset pain signaling.

  • Target areas:
    1. Medial calcaneal tubercle
    2. Proximal 1/3 of plantar fascia
    3. Trigger points in calf (often overlooked source of plantar tension)

Treatment Plan: 1× per week for 3–5 sessions

Muscle Activation/Soft Ts mobs

Goal: Correct the muscular imbalances and compensation patterns causing PF.
